GLOSSARY

Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE)

Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) is one of the indicators used to measure a data center’s sustainability.

WUE is calculated by taking last year’s total water consumption and dividing it by the number of kW/h energy the usage of IT equipment in the data center. This includes:

  • Water usage to cool the data center
  • Electricity produced on-site
  • Humidity regulation in the data center

WUE is an important factor in the assessment of a data center’s sustainability and environmental impact, especially since data centers require large amounts of water to maintain a stable temperature and prevent overheating of the IT equipment. The lower the WUE value, the more efficient the usage of the water is at the data center.
